今天的海笛小课堂要讲的是委婉语，我们在表达敏感、可能令人难堪和不快的话题时通常会采用一些委婉、含蓄的说法。

　　在英语和汉语的表达中都有着丰富的委婉语，不同语言里的委婉语也反映着不同民族的文化特征。

　　《牛津·外研社英汉汉英词典》中有一个语用信息框专门整理出了一些英语表达中你可能会用到的委婉语，包括死亡、疾病、贫穷、衰老等话题。

　　1. 死亡

　　pass away

　　breathe one’s last

　　to have found rest

　　(俚语) tokick the bucket

　　(俚语) toturn up one’s toes

　　The old man is in heaven/ The old man is with God老人已经归天

　　The old lady closed her eyesat 8 am 老太太早上8点闭了眼

　　His mother is no more/ His mother is gone他母亲已经不在了

　　The soldier laid down his life/ The soldier made the ultimate sacrifice 战士英雄牺牲了

　　2. 疾病

　　She is mentally handicapped 她有智力障碍

　　My granny is physically handicapped我奶奶手脚不便（handicapped：残障的）

　　He is visually impaired 他视觉不好（impaired：受损的）

　　She is hard of hearing 她耳朵背

　　(口语) He’s got the Big C他得了癌症（英语中用the Big C指癌症）

　　3. 贫穷

　　a person of modest means 穷人

　　the disadvantaged 穷人（disadvantaged：形容国家或人时可译为“贫穷的”）

　　I am badly-off/ I am hard up我手头紧

　　She is down on her luck 她生活不宽裕

　　(正式) She is financially embarrassed她生活不宽裕

　　4. 老人

　　senior citizens

　　people of advanced years

　　elderly people

　　I feel my age我感觉到我老了

　　rest home/ nursing home 养老院

　　5. 卫生间

　　the ladies’ room

　　the gentlemen’s room

　　the little girls’ room

　　the little boys’ room

　　Where can I wash my hands? 洗手间在哪儿？

　　6. 其他话题

　　He is between jobs/ He’s resting 他下岗了

　　sanitation workers/ waste disposal workers 环卫工人

　　She is in the family way/She is expecting她有喜了
